What careers options are available for accounting students?

An accounting degree develops analytical and financial-reporting skills that apply across many industries. Depending on interests, experience, location, and additional qualifications, graduates may pursue roles such as:

  • staff accountant
  • audit associate
  • tax associate
  • cost accountant
  • budget analyst
  • financial analyst
  • risk advisory associate

Advanced positions and professional designations may require additional education, experience, examinations, or licensure. This list is not comprehensive, if you don't see your preferred profession in this list speak with a faculty member or an academic advisor about career opportunities.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Graduate Pathways

Most states require 150 credit hours for CPA licensure, but requirements to become a certified public accountant vary by location and may exceed the credits required for the bachelor’s degree.

Ball State advisors can help students plan for this requirement through electives or the Accelerated Master's Program, allowing qualified students to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in as few as five years while preparing for the CPA exam.
